How is it going ?
As you all know, I spend a lot of time online. As a freelance translator and lover of good content, I read a lot of articles and watch my fair share of videos on pretty much everything. From Casey Neistat to Buzzfeed videos, vegan recipes and crazy makeup tutorials, I read a lot of comments. Whilst I try to stay away from the comment section on YouTube and its unbelievable negativity in general, I can’t help but get annoyed when I come across certain comments.
I will often read : “vegetarianism is a diet not a lifestyle” “veganism is a lifestyle not a diet”. Now don’t get me wrong, expressing your opinion is perfectly fine, as long as you don’t talk down to someone for having a different opinion and don’t spread or encourage hate.
If you read my articles, I use the words diet and lifestyle all the time to talk about vegetarianism and veganism because, in my opinion, it is not something to stress about.
But after reading the comment section on Youtube, it seems like it is. People are stressing out and attacking each other over those two words.
So you know what I always do in case of doubt, search the web and open my dictionary.
Oxford dictionary says : The kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats and A special course of food to which a person restricts themselves, either to lose weight or for medical reasons:
Cambridge dictionary says : the food and drink usually eaten or drunk by a person or group and an eating plan in which someone eats less food, or only particular types of food, because they want to become thinner or for medical reasons
Collins dictionary says : a specific allowance or selection of food, esp prescribed to control weight or in disorders in which certain foods are contraindicated and the food and drink that a person or animal regularly consumes
We should agree that vegetarianism and veganism fall into the same category, right ? They are defined by what a person eat or do not eat and people can and will often use them as a way to lose weight.
What does lifestyle mean ?
Merriam Webster dictionary says : the typical way of life of an individual, group, or culture.
